Hiking from Pra Loup

More than 30 km of marked and maintained trails, from Col des Thuiles to Malune...

The Ubaye Valley offers almost unlimited opportunities for hiking, over 600 kilometres of waymarked footpaths are at your disposal, all clearly signposted and well-maintained.

The scenery is breathtaking, in late spring and early summer the meadows are carpeted with flowers such as orchids, anemones and gentians. As summer gives way to autumn the vibrant hues contrasting with the clear blue sky are a photographer's dream.

Wildlife lovers and birdwathchers will not be disappointed, most of the higher altitude walks provide plentiful opportunities to see marmots, chamois and ibex, and large raptors such as eagles and vultures are frequently soaring overhead.

The variety of hikes is never-ending - craggy peaks, rolling meadows, thundering waterfalls and crystal clear lakes so if you feel like trying something adventurous why not hire the services of an experienced mountain guide and tackle one of the famous local peaks such as the Pain de Sucre or the Brec du Chambeyron.

With over 30 km of marked trails and 14 different routes, Pra Loup is a paradise for hikers.

The Tourist Office offers hiking plans on Pra Loup and the entire valley of Ubaye for sale.

Family walks

Getting out into the meadows and crags gives opportunities to see all sorts of things that are harder to find at home. Wild flowers, birds and butterflies are everywhere and on certain walks the marmots show little fear of passers-by and are happy to continue about their business despite the audience.

Several waymarked footpaths start from Pra Loup and, in addition, there is the option to take the cable-car up the mountainside to access the altitude restaurants and then stroll back down through the meadows. A map showing the local walks is available from the Tourist Information Centre.

A little further afield, most of the well-known walking areas provide good car parking and there are often picnic tables within a short walk of the car.

Local guides

The local guides will be delighted to share their passion for the mountains: half-day hikes or trips of several days. Head out and discover the unspoilt countryside, observe the animals, a torrent, a flower, conquer a summit or gaze at the stars...

Mercantour national Park

The magic of the Alps

With peaks reaching over 3000 m, many glacial lakes, and six valleys, each with its unique character, Mercantour National Park is a jewel of preserved nature, just one hour away from the sea.

A complex mix of climatic influences contributes to the uniqueness and variety of landscapes, natural environments, and the Park’s flora and fauna. The Mercantour is the last promontory of the Alpine range, just before it descends toward the Mediterranean Sea.
